Artist Marcus Mac, an Irish singer, based in Edinburgh, is releasing a new song titled ‘Nochd’, written in Gaelic and discussing body image. The track dropped on the 28th of May.

Nochd is a thoughtful exploration of body image and inclusivity. It gives rise to a discussion of how our attraction is defined by both mainstream and queer media. The single is the third from Marcas Mac, following ‘Dumbbells’ and ‘Fichead ‘s a h-Ochd’. The song is a powerful pop ballad, making subtle use of synths and vocal harmonies over a distinctive dance beat. Marcas provides hypnotic vocals alongside the musical talents of Gary Keane.

Accompanying the new song is a music video. The video is simplistic and intimate, with minimal props or scenery, instead narrowing its focus to a passionate and sincere performance by Marcas. The video uses shots of classical statues to explore the universality of imposed beauty standards. Another motif in the video is images of light refracted into rainbow colours, providing a subtle nod to the LGBTQIA+ themes in the song. The video has a serious tone throughout, with an uplifting ending that provides a more positive conclusion to the track.

Marcas Mac is currently based in Edinburgh and has worked ‘with Gary Keane, who is involved with London group Electric Pineapple. ‘Nochd’ was made virtually in order to keep to COVID-19 safe practices. Marcas has been named Gaeldom’s ‘King of Pop’ and is also a part of LUPUS&LEO with Joshua Wilson. They made the music video for ‘Nochd’ together, using only the singer’s phone camera. The new song is a prequel to Marcas’ previous single ‘Dumbbells’, which discusses someone being rejected and questioning the extent to which this is down to them and who they are. ‘Nochd’ continued from his song ‘Fichead ‘s a h-Ochd’.

Fans of pop music will love Marcas Mac’s sound and relevant lyrics. Those interested in LGBTQIA+ theory and Gaelic language music should make sure to check out his work. Marcas’ new single ‘Nochd’ discusses body inclusivity and will appeal to those interested in this movement, along with fans of its musical spokespersons such as Lizzo.
