Set to be released in November this year, the most recent EP ‘11 Waverley Road’ from Chameleon Lady is an experimental departure from their previous album, ‘Calling Card’, which the band released in 2018.
The indie-rock sextet strives to interweave their Celtic roots with a vibrant rock sound inspired by 80s legends like Bon Jovi. ‘11 Waverley Road’, named after the house it was written in, is chock full of long striking guitar chords, addictive riffs and impassioned vocals. With creative use of synths, and occasional incorporation of an edgy auto-tune sound, Chameleon Lady’s sound is nothing if not distinctive.
Lead track ‘Valentine’, is a ballad that features an intense, battle march sound, with rigid almost military drumming that is stirringly catchy. The song is built around a simple, anthemic chord structure, using a more classic rock sound that is contrasted with a unique organ style synth melody. Raw, rasping vocals bawl the emotional lyrics, upholding the intense mood throughout the song.
Chameleon Lady is based in Edinburgh, and is undoubtedly a family affair. The lineup consists of Cameron Middlemass and his brother Tom, Caitlin Hutchinson (Tom’s partner), Kenny Hutchinson (her father!), her brother Robbie Hutchinson and their cousin Michael Fitzpatrick. They always aim to be collaborative and equal in their songwriting process, saying that “everyone will chip in and shape it into something that suits the song perfectly. Every song on the EP is a result of complete collaboration within the band.”
Family values seem to have worked in their favour, as Chameleon Lady has a number of impressive achievements. They have played on ‘Boogie in the Morning’ radio show, and opened for a number of artists including Lewis Capaldi, The Darkness and Skerrvore.
