With Rojo, Cuban classical guitarist Laura Mazon Franqui has released a debut solo album that is both a performance project and a personal statement. The recording explores memory, resilience, identity, love, and the people who helped shape her artistic path.
The album was released by Prima Classic and features works by Leo Brouwer, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Francisco Tárrega, Joaquín Turina, Jorge Morel, Carlos Rafael Rivera, and Claudia Montero. Its title comes from Montero’s Rojo, a work connected to the color red and its associations with passion, strength, vitality, and transformation.
Less than two weeks after its release, Rojo surpassed 500,000 streams on Spotify. That milestone is especially notable in the classical music landscape, where solo guitar albums rarely achieve such rapid streaming visibility.
At the same time, Mazon Franqui appeared in a Times Square campaign with Karat, bringing her music to one of the world’s busiest public stages. For the Miami-based artist, the moment connected her Cuban roots, her dedication to Latin American repertoire, and her belief that music can cross borders and reach new generations.
