To the average person, a delayed flight would mean stress, anxiety and maybe even panic. Well, not for John Young, the composer of this beautiful new single, featuring vocal talents of Laura Mitchell, who was left waiting for a flight with a melody he could not shake. By the time he reached London, the song was fully composed and ready for a keys player, a violinist, and most of all, the soulful sound of Laura’s voice.
The song holds an ageless beauty, you cant quite tell if it is a modern ballad or a 90s soulful love song about missing someone you love. The opening line, “I never was the girl for you” popped into the composers head, and he simply couldn’t shake it, until it was on a page in front of him, with a musical cavalry consisting of pianist, David Bennett who nailed the bluesy-jazz feel and singer, Laura Mitchell, who added the achingly powerful and emotional vocals.
Laura immediately connected with the song, using her experience as a wedding singer to adapt John’s lyrics to her own style.
“I didn’t see this coming or work towards it. I am in a wedding band. At weddings, many people ask, ‘Do you perform you own stuff?’ or ‘You should go on X Factor’. I didn’t have plans for that. I used to write music in my teens but worked off most of that angst and sadly stopped writing music when I started learning about it at Uni. I suffered from stage fright for a long time, but through the wedding band, the ability to put on the dress and heels and become a rock star – singing other people’s songs, I become someone else. It’s nice for me to become vulnerable again with a chance to show off the softer side of my vocals”.
